How do I know if my child has Dyslexia?
If your child tests two years behind on the Quick Score test, and has the symptoms of a blocked Auditory Processing gate, then you can suspect Dyslexia. Many children also scramble and make reversals visually when they read (reading ‘no’ for ‘on’, ‘was’ for ‘saw’, etc.,) and when they write. Even though this may not be considered a true Dyslexia, I like to get rid of these reversals and scrambling also, along with the Auditory issues that will mainly be addressed.

What if my child has Dyslexic-like symptoms, but does not test two years behind in reading yet?

I like to “prevent” Dyslexia by doing the same techniques with the child. Why wait until they are far behind? If your child just struggles with reading, when the other siblings don’t struggle, don’t hesitate to use these strategies to move this child past those struggles. This is such an easy process to use, so inexpensive, and makes the child feel so smart quickly, that there is no reason to use it when a child is struggling to any degree.

Visual Processing Gate Blocked
Reading reversals after age 7 (on=no, was=saw, of=to)
Oral reading starts smooth, but becomes more labored
Yawning shortly after reading begins
Smart kids who don’t want to read (due to eye fatigue)

Auditory Processing Gate Blocked
Phonics sounds don’t stick
Sight words hard to memorize (sounds out all words)
Spelling rules hard to remember
Easily misunderstands verbal information
Guesses at long words frequently (forgets words he just sounded out)
Can’t remember multiplication facts, difficulty saying months in order
