Best Government Money Can Buy | Documentary | Democracy, Lobbyists, Corruption in America (DVD)
The Best Government Money Can Buy? is the first behind-the-scenes, comprehensive, non-partisan examination of the system of lobbying in Washington, DC. The cost of election campaigns has spiraled out of control, to the extent that, on average, our representatives spend more than 25% of their time fund-raising. Even our Presidents regularly interrupt the nation’s work in order to spend time fund-raising! Veteran documentary film-maker, British-born Francis Megahy, makes a journey of discovery as he tries to answer some questions which puzzle him: who provides the money? What effect does it have? How is it connected to the financing of political campaigns? And most crucial, is it in the public interest? the Best Government Money Can Buy? explores the issue through interviews with real Washington beltway insiders, key participants in the process – who often speak with surprising candor.

About the Director
Veteran documentary director Francis Megahy, who now lives in the US, began his career in British television, as a writer and director, working on documentaries for the BBC and ITV networks. Later he wrote and directed top-rated TV series and TV movies. Megahy has made more than forty documentaries for British television channels, winning awards for One Pair of Eyes a comparison between the life of an Oxford-educated Indian journalist and that of an immigrant community in the North of England; Big Fish, Little Fish a study of corporate mergers and takeovers; and What Shall We Tell the Children a documentary about sex education, which is in the British National Film Archive. Megahy has had a lifelong interest in social issues, and many of his films, such as Death of an Informer, which created the trend for dramatized documentaries and was so explosive that the evening ITN News was moved to accommodate it, told the story of an IRA murder East Side Story, a study of Hispanic life in East Los Angeles The Last Round?, his account of the framing of New Jersey boxer, Hurricane Carter for murder, generated a million-plus signature petition to Jimmy Carter asking for his namesake s release have reflected that interest. In 2001 and 2002 Megahy was a member of the Board of the Open Society Institute Documentary Fund in New York, which helped to create the House of Documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. His independent movie THE DISAPPEARANCE of KEVIN JOHNSON an ironic fictional documentary, about a Hollywood con-man, featuring Pierce Brosnan, James Coburn and Dudley Moore was the opening film at the Slamdance Festival, was shown at the Sedona Festival, Arizona [where it won the Audience Award], the Palm Beach, Boston and Scottsdale Festivals, where it also won the Audience Award.
