About the Director
Veteran documentary director Francis Megahy, who now lives in the US, began his career in British television, as a writer and director, working on documentaries for the BBC and ITV networks. Later he wrote and directed top-rated TV series and TV movies. Megahy has made more than forty documentaries for British television channels, winning awards for One Pair of Eyes a comparison between the life of an Oxford-educated Indian journalist and that of an immigrant community in the North of England; Big Fish, Little Fish a study of corporate mergers and takeovers; and What Shall We Tell the Children a documentary about sex education, which is in the British National Film Archive. Megahy has had a lifelong interest in social issues, and many of his films, such as Death of an Informer, which created the trend for dramatized documentaries and was so explosive that the evening ITN News was moved to accommodate it, told the story of an IRA murder East Side Story, a study of Hispanic life in East Los Angeles The Last Round?, his account of the framing of New Jersey boxer, Hurricane Carter for murder, generated a million-plus signature petition to Jimmy Carter asking for his namesake s release have reflected that interest. In 2001 and 2002 Megahy was a member of the Board of the Open Society Institute Documentary Fund in New York, which helped to create the House of Documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. His independent movie THE DISAPPEARANCE of KEVIN JOHNSON an ironic fictional documentary, about a Hollywood con-man, featuring Pierce Brosnan, James Coburn and Dudley Moore was the opening film at the Slamdance Festival, was shown at the Sedona Festival, Arizona [where it won the Audience Award], the Palm Beach, Boston and Scottsdale Festivals, where it also won the Audience Award.
